The year started off quiet for us. We mostly spent a good amount of time getting settled in on the second floor of the new house, and slowly chipping away at the first floor. But you want to hear about YOU, right? So, we'll start with your Tato's birthday. On January 4th, he got the best birthday present. He went with your mama to the doctor, and they gave her an ultrasound. We got to see you for the first time, and we heard your tiny heartbeat. It was ultra-fast and awesome. They gave us this picture of your tiny body.
One thing you'll come to learn is that you're a lucky kid who will always have two Christmases. Your Tato was born here where Christmas is on December 25th. You've already heard about that one. Your mom was born in Ukraine, and in Ukraine they celebrate Christmas a couple weeks later. You'll call it Rizdvo, and you'll have a great dinner. This year we had dinner at your Dido and Babsya's house, and it was a really fun time. Their friends, the Kukuruza's were there, and we met for the first time Nadia and her fiance' David. They were just recently engaged, and if you're born on time, you'll probably go to their wedding, but we won't hold it against you if you don't remember, as you'll only be a month or so old.
A week or so later we went for brunch at your Tia Maria and Tio William's new house, and we saw their baby, Ceci, her brother, Nico, and our friends Mariama and Paul, and Gayle and Nick, who have a brand new baby named Lucia. She's adorable, and I'm sure you'll get along well when you finally meet.
January 25th would have been your grandpa's birthday. This was the first January 25th since he died, and your dad misses him. But you'll hear lots of stories about him. We'll make sure you see some video and tell you all the things he would have said to embarrass you.
January 30th is your step-grandpa Joe's birthday (we'll likely not refer to him as that, because it's awkward as all get out) and he's looking forward to meeting you too.

Holy Quickness, Baby!
We decided to start making a baby in December 2010.
We actually made a baby, in November 2010.
Okay, well, we didn't actually make the baby. The baby decided to show up, and we were thrilled when we found out a few weeks later. There was a very obvious plus on the pregnancy test. We kissed each other, and laughed at the coolness.
This isn't really a blog about all that, though. It's mostly a blog about Shpuntik, and the things we've done with you.
Mama had SUSHI!!! She didn't know you were in there yet, so don't get mad. Apparently pregnant women aren't supposed to eat raw fish. What could be wrong with raw fish? It's not like they're crawling with bacteria or anything. But it seems that it's worked out okay so far. Once she saw that plus, we've stayed away from the sushi bar. That one time was for your great uncle, Maryan's, birthday at Todai in Schaumburg. A place your Tato doesn't dig all that much, but is very much adored by the Ukrainian contingent in your family. Someday we'll take you to Wakamono and get you some real sushi, but probably not until you're well into your second year or so. (mama says five or six, but I think you could at least have some miso soup. It has jalapenos in it. okay. Maybe that's not such a good idea).
Other events in December were Grandma Heidi and Aunt Vicky's birthdays. Grandma got a super cool camera, and Vicky got something else ultra cool that we can't remember. Must have been freakin' great. (sorry, Veek. You'll have to fill Shpuntik in on what awesomeness we bestowed upon you for your birthday).
We spent Christmas Eve at Aunt Vicky and Uncle Rudy's apartment with baby Rudy. At this point we still hadn't told people about you, and we smiled at the antics of Baby Ru as he spurned his Dora the Explorer gifts for better ones like boxes and wrapping paper. Rudy's sister Roxy prepared a traditional Mexican soup which was amazing.
The next day, on Christmas, Grandma Nataliya and Grandpa Bohdan had a get-together with Ukrainian food. There was super delicious holubtsi, and other tasty stuff. We exchanged presents and ate well into the night-time. Great Uncle Maryan and Uncle Uko were there too.
To end the year, and begin the new one Mama and Tato usually go out to a dance club, or to see a concert, but this year we thought we'd try something a little different. We went to the Hyatt Regency hotel downtown for the Jack FM New Year's party. It was great dancing, and two separate ballrooms filled with people. The main one had a band, and the downstairs ballroom had a DJ, with a drummer. Very strange, but very cool. Except toward the end of the evening, when the dance floor was soaking wet and it seemed like everybody but us was bombed. We weren't drinking, (okay, Tato had a few, but not by any means sloshed) so we just laughed at the drunkies and danced in our own space. There was many a moment where Tato's eyes met Mama's, and we smiled at the knowledge that we were dancing with our new shpuntik.
Happy 2011, little one.

Shpuntik
So, this is when the shpuntik comes into the picture.
Right now we're lying in bed. It's a morning we've decided to spend together. The three of us. Only we can't see you yet, shpuntik. We can hear you though. glug-glug-glug. You're swimming in Mama's belly right now, and Tato sings to you, hoping you'll hear. Soon enough, you'll be out and about, but for now, we want to document some of the journey. We love you.
We'll start from when you started. And you started around the middle of November, 2010.
